Goats Cheese and Chive scones

I've got a recipe to share today, the goats cheese can be swapped for cheddar or if you wanted something with a bit of bite try them with some mexican spicy cheese.

These are really nice served warm with a dish of soup or a bowl of stew.

Here is the recipe I used to make 24 scones at a cost of : £1.40 8 ounces Self raising flour (16p) 2 ounces of butter (6p) 2 ounces hard goat cheese (50p) 5 fluid ounces ( or there about) milk (14p) pinch of salt handful of chives (free from the garden) Start by rubbing the flour, salt and butter together Grate the cheese and stir into the flour mix finely chop the chives and add to the flour and cheese add the milk unit it makes a firm dough roll out onto a floured surface and cut into circles using a cutter or a glass if you haven't got a cutter place onto baking tray and brush with some milk cook until golden brown (approx 15-20 minutes)

Homemade Sugar scrub

I honestly did mean to keep this blog active, but then life happened and it sort of get left to the side. For now I am setting myself the goal of updating it at least twice a month with some money saving tips or DIY projects like the one I am sharing today.

Like most people I do enjoy a bit of luxury once in a while, and with this really easy recipe you can have plenty of luxury without the luxury price tag.

This is what you will need to make your sugar scrub:

  • Brown sugar and unrefined caster sugar
  • almond oil
  • ground oatmeal
  • evening primrose oil (optional)
  • aromatherapy oil of your choice (optional)

This is so simple to make, you need 5 parts sugar to one part oatmeal, mix it in well then add 3 teaspoons of oils and 10-15 drops of scented oil, I have used orange oil in this scrub but you could use other oils like lavender for calming and relaxation or rosemary which is good for calming the skin. Once everything is mixed up well you just grab a handful and rub it over your body to leave your skin soft, smooth and moisturised.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I do!

bit of shopping

It has been a crazy busy few weeks so I've been neglecting this blog :(  I wanted a share some really good deals that are in Co-op right now and also share where I have been buying some of our groceries.

I called into my local Co-op yesterday as I knew they had some good deals and this is what I picked up

I got a 9 pack of Cushelle they are normally £5.35, their website says that they are on sale at £3.25 however they were only £3 in my local store and I had a 50p coupon too so I paid £2.50 for a 9 pack making a saving of £2.85 the coupon can be found here

Next I got 3 packs of Huggies wet wipes, these are the 64 packs and are £2.59 each and are on offer for buy one get 2 free making me a saving of  £5.18

The Imperial Leather shower gels are £2.20 each and again are on a buy 1 get 2 free offer making a saving of £4.40

Lastly are the kitchen rolls, they are £1.75 each and again are buy 1 get 2 free giving me a saving of  £3.50.

My total for all this was £9.04 giving me a total saving of  £15.93!! These offers fun out on 17th September so you need to be quick if you want to get your hands on some of these things.

The next lot of shopping I got was from Approved Food, they sell all sorts of groceries at massively discounted prices. Some times the best before dates make be close or just passed, but I've never bothered much with best befores only expiration and use by dates.

I am not going to list everything from this shop but it is all there on the photos and including delivery it only cost me just over £27!

A few websites for getting coupons

Here in the UK is can become really difficult to find coupons. I am certainly no expert on this but what I am finding is actually you don't need to be an expert to save some money. If you are watching the extreme couponing show and thinking you are going to get deals like that, I can tell you now it isn't going to happen. That doesn't mean it's worth looking out for the coupons and deals. There are a few ways that I have found to get coupons. The first one is www.supersavvyme.co.uk a lot of those coupons will be for tesco's which is fine with me as I collect the clubcard points which means even more free stuff! A note about coupons and tesco clubcard points is you will get the points for the total before coupons which means for a £20 shop that you only end up paying £5 for you will still get 20 points. There are sites out there that will always keep you up to date with the latest money off coupons and I will put a list of them at the bottom of this post. Another way you can get coupons is to contact the manufacturer directly, sometimes they will send you out a free sample, sometimes they will send out coupons and other times unfortunately they won't send anything but if you make up a template of the email you want to send asking it doesn't take up much time.

I will do another post at some point showing some of the good deals I get and where I got the coupons from for it.

Have a look at these websites for some great deals and some money off and don't forget to look out for the deals, if you have a coupon for an item that is on sale then you could get it for practically nothing, sometimes completely free and on occasions end up with the supermarket owing you money!

Exciting fun!

Just because I like to save money and live frugally doesn't mean I don't get to enjoy my hobbies and still do almost everything I want to. I am a crafter, I started off several years ago making cards which has developed over the years to the point where I now prefer to alter thing and use lots of mixed media. Anyone that crafts, card making, scrapbooks and so on will know just how expensive it can get! There always seems to be something new on the market that we just can't possibly craft without so we buy all these new gadgets use them once then put them away in a cupboard never to be seen again (well sometimes it's like that ).

I can honestly say I very rarely spend much money on crafting. I still have lots of designer papers, boxes of trims more paper flowers than I will ever use and I have always paid a fraction of the cost for all of it. So how do I do it? There are loads of ways that I get my craft supplies, some of it is savvy shopping, some of it making my own supplies I have found that almost every craft product out there will have an alternative, that doesn't mean it is better, or even as good but for me as long as it works and gives me an end result that I am happy with then I can't ask for any more.

I have started a new group in the Smeared and Smudged forum where I will teach people how to save money on their crafting. There will be bi-weekly tips and tutorials with write ups, plenty of photos and even some videos, I might even do a few giveaways too and we all know the best price is free!

If you'd like to sign up to find out how you can be saving money and still getting to create then head over to the forum, it's completely free to sign up

Take stock and plan

The past few days I have been organising my kitchen. The reason I wanted to do this was so I could take stock of all the food we currently have in the house. Buying food is a necessity and for most people will take up a massive part of a family's budget but it doesn't have to cost as much as you think. There are several things you can do to reduce the amount you spend in the supermarket and not all of them are going to take up massive amounts of your time.

The first thing you should do before decided to cut the costs at the supermarket is to take stock. The easiest way to do this is to set aside a couple of hours as a one off, open up a spreadsheet document (if you haven't got any software like this you can get some free from open office ) and make an inventory of all the food you have in the house. I have set mine out in lists with the following headings: Frozen food, Dried food, Fresh food, Baking supplies, Desserts, Sauces and Condiments, of course you can pick any format that suits you. Under each of these headings I then typed in all the food I had and then in the column next to it the amount I have. Once you have completed this you can open up a new spreadsheet. This time you are going to do a meal plan. If you have never planed meals before I suggest you start with just planning one week to start with  but as soon as you feel able to try to plan a month at a time. On my meal plan I type in what evening meal I will be cooking each day then in the column next to it I type in what I will need to cook it. This does take a little while but I normally do mine over a few nights, plus don't forget if you are doing this on a computer you can copy and paste certain meals if you will be having them more than once a month. Personally I find this the easiest way to make sure I am never spending more than I need to on food. When I get a spare minute or 2 I will go to my stock list and alter the figures once we have used the items, I have mine colour coded too, if we have something but still have plenty of stock I will highlight it green, this tells me that I have plenty left but we have already eaten that recently, If we use up something and don't have much left I will highlight it orange, this tells me that I need to check before adding a meal to the plan using this item as there may not be enough, when we completely run out of something it will be highlighted red telling me that I need to add it to my shopping list.

I know some people will be thinking well what do I put on a meal plan? The best advice I can give here is don't look at it as a chore and use your stock list. One way it can be done is by looking for your favourite items that are in your stock list then thinking what could I make with this, if all the other ingredients are also in stock then add it to your plan. you want to try and plan your week or months meals with buying as little in as possible. Of course when you have been doing this for a while the food you had stocked in your cupboards will have been used up, this is when you will plan ahead.

Planning ahead will always save you money as you will know exactly what you will be cooking so only need to buy those ingredients. You may need to use up all your willpower to not buy all of those extras that bump up the price at the checkout.

Another tip is don't kid yourself, it's all well and good you putting in the plan that you will cook all these big meals that will take hours to prepare and cook if you know full well when you get in from a long day at work you won't want to do anything which brings me to another tip...get a crockpot! I call mine my electric Mother, for me there is no nicer feeling than getting in from work (especially on a cold wet day) to find that the house is filled with the smell of some gorgeous meal which is cooked perfectly and just needs to be served up.  I know that all I need to do in a morning is throw in the ingredients switch it on and go to work, so if you are like me and really don't want to cook every day then invest in one. Another tip when using a crockpot is always make too much, the same can be said with any meal almost. If you have extras or purposely make extras put them in a container and freeze them. This is a perfect contingency plan for when you get stuck in traffic and get home late, for when you are sick and can't face cooking or any other reason you are unable to or don't want to cook. It's all about the planning, anyone that knows me will know I am unorganised, forgetful and a total scatter brain so if I can do this I am sure anyone can!

I know this has been a long a waffly post so if you are confused by any of it or would like clarification please ask any questions in the comments box and I will answer them as soon a I can.

Trying something new

Hi everyone, I thought I would give something new a try. Like most other people I am trying to find ways to reduce our family outgoings. I am sure that everything I have to share with you will already be on the internet and used in countless homes all over the world, many of the things I am going to try will have come from others sharing their experiences online.

It is no secret that everyone is feeling the pinch right now and the economy doesn't look like it is anywhere near close to recovering, this is not something I know a great deal about so please don't ask me about it too much as I will just end up talking complete rubbish.

This blog is going to be my personal frugal journey. I have been finding new ways to make our family more economical and already I am finding that in the process I am learning lots, not just on how to save money but learning how having less is good for your well being, at least it is for mine.

So where do you start with all this? That is a question I was asking myself over and over until I find my personal starting point which was to write down 3 things. Those 3 things were a list of what money comes into the house, a list of what money gets spent and my goals.

Now the money coming in is an easy one, the money going out isn't so straightforward, you know the big things, the mortgage, the electricity, gas, water and all those other monthly expenses. Now the problem starts when you try and think of all those little bits, the impulse buys the bargain you see in the supermarket and think you need. It was thinking about all those things that made me realise I need to keep the till receipts from every purchase and keep a rolling list. I am still in the progress of doing this but already I can see where money can be saved. I would say this is the most important thing to do as until you know exactly where your money goes you cannot start to save it.

The plan is to make a new post on this blog once a week however I may just end up blogging whenever I feel I have something worth sharing.

I am looking forward to sharing this adventure with you all, maybe you will learn something things along the way and maybe you will be kind enough to share some ideas with me too.
